Judges Union Slams Government Attacks Against CoS Ruling on TV Licenses

Greece’s Union of Judges and Prosecutors were angered by Government Spokeswoman Olga Gerovasili following the ruling by the Council of State (CoS) judges that deemed the recent TV license auction as unconstitutional. A statement issued on Thursday slammed statements made by the government representative as “dangerous for our democracy and the rule of law.”
They were particularly critical of Gerovasili’s comment that “nothing will stand in the way of the government’s determination to bring some order to the radio and television landscape” and a Facebook comment by Alternate Health Minister Pavlos Polakis that said that the ruling was a “judicial coup.” The judges’ statement questioned the government’s reaction to the decision, stating that they could not understand the purpose of the government’s reaction or the reasons for its undermining of the court’s institutional authority to judge whether laws are in line with the Greek Constitution.
The attacks by government members were labelled as “unprovoked” and it pointed to “a clear effort to involve the justice system and its officials in a political controversy.”
“It is the basic and fundamental duty of the judges to weigh cases on the basis of the Constitution without taking specific interests and political ambitions into consideration. Justice working in any another direction would be dangerous for our democracy and for the rule of law,” said part of the union’s statement.
