Destructive fires raged for the third time in two weeks on Evia, Greece’s second largest island.
Two major forest fires broke out in the early morning hours on Tuesday in Karystos and Kymi. The fire on Karystos broke out at 1:40 am in an inaccessible woodland area near Thymio village.
A force of 34 firefighters with 13 vehicles started operating in the area. Early in the morning, firefighting airplanes stopped dropping water due to strong winds.
At 6:00 am another fire broke out in a wooded area at the Soutsini area near Kymi. On this fire front, 52 men and 16 vehicles are operating, while four aircraft and a helicopter drop water.
Both fire fronts are under control, according to the Hellenic Fire Service.
