Lawyers' Strike Deemed Illegal by Top Greek Court

STRIKE
Greece’s Council of State, it’s top administrative court, decided that the Greek lawyers strike that started on January 12 is illegal and in violation of the Greek constitution and international law. The lawyers’ strike brought Greek courts to a standstill and left more than 300,000 court cases up in the air creating a huge backlog that will be difficult to deal with.
The walkout led to a freeze in civil cases and halted some major corruption trials that were expected to bring necessary revenue to state funds, such as the Siemens scandal, the Proton Bank trial and the Vatopedi land swap case. Despite the strike action, the Athens Bar Association allowed the trial concerning the murder of Pavlos Fyssas by ultra fascist Golden Dawn members to continue.
The lawyers strike is to protest against austerity reforms.
