Wine Tours in the Historic Wine Region of Peloponnese, Greece

greek vineyardsA perfect way to get to know the beautiful Peloponnese region of Greece is to enjoy an amazing wine tour during your visit. Greece is on of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, having started cultivating vineyards and creating wine over 6,500 years ago. At the beginning, wine was produced on a much smaller scale, although in ancient times it was eventually transported along the Mediterranean to Italy during the Roman Empire. Greek wine during medieval times also flourished as a trade when wines from Crete and Monemvasia were said to have cost a pretty penny when exported to northern Europe.
In fact, the second oldest known grape remnants in the world and evidence of crushed grapes was discovered in Greece. It should be of no surprise that as far back as 1600 BC, when Greek civilization spread throughout the Mediterranean, their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine, also spread Dionysian cults and Greek wines became well-known throughout the region.
There are different regions of the Peloponnese which can be traversed on a relaxing holiday or over a long weekend trip. Dating back to references from Homer who called the region Ampeloessa, meaning “full of vines,” the vineyards of the Peloponnese have captured the hearts of all who have visited this historic wine region in Greece. The region has the distinction of being labeled AOC, or “Vin d’Appellation d’origins Control.” This label is intended as a guarantee of origin and of quality. The wines of each AOC are supposed to have a distinct and consistent character and only specific areas capable of producing such wines can qualify for AOC status.
