Greek Physicist Eleftherios Goulielmakis Excels in Germany

goulielmakis1-708Greece has birthed numerous well-known scientists, however, due to its current situation the country is not able to support them in their careers, forcing most of them to move to other countries, noted Greek physicist Dr. Eleftherios Goulielmakis, researcher at the German Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics.

The 40-year-old researcher was recently able to create the fastest visible light pulses and use them to measure how much time it takes the electrons inside the atoms of matter react to light. He is the first person worldwide to have achieved such an experiment.

The Greek researcher used a light-field synthesizer that he developed himself. Through his achievement he opened a way to accelerate the development of a new generation of electronics and computers based on light rather than electricity.

Eleftherios Goulielmakis was born in Heraklion, Crete in 1975. He graduated from the Physics Department of the University of Crete in 2000 and received his doctorate from the University of Munich in 2005. Since 2010 he has been the head of the Attoelectronics Laboratory of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Germany.

His research is focused on the study of the dynamics of electrons in matter, developing and using ultra-fast flash lasers. Through his research, he aims to lay the foundations for the development of electronic circuits that operate with light.

In 2007 he received the “G. Foteinou” award by the Academy of Athens and in 2012 the Visual Award from the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). In 2013, he received the “Gustav Hertz” award by the German Physical Society and in 2015 the “Roentgen” award by the University of Giessen.
