Migrant Crisis: Lesvos Island Tourism Suffers Dramatic Downturn

The increased inflow of refugees and migrants has seriously affected tourism on Lesvos island and other neighboring Greek islands.

Tourist agent Ilias Pikoulos said to ANA-MPA that six cruise ship operators with approximately 5,000 passengers on-board each ship was expected to dock at Mytilene port and Molyvos port, but have now cancelled their planned trips. “It is a severe blow to the local economy which may work negatively for the island’s tourism particularly for the important cruise ship market,” said Pikoulos. The cruise ships will dock at Myrina port on Limnos island, instead of Mytilene.
A meeting at the office of the Ministry of Economy, Infrastructure, Shipping, and Tourism was held on Monday, with interim Minister of Economics; Nikos Christodoulakis, to discuss the substantial downturn in tourism on the islands. During the meeting, the officials discussed the consequences of the migrants inflow to the islands for the current and next year’s tourist season and drafted immediate measures to combat the issue. They also decided upon targeted actions to promote future tourism on the islands.
