Agathonisi: Number of migrants surpasses number of residents
The local community on the small Greek island of Agathonisi is trying to tackle the migrant and refugee issue with no doctors, water or infrastructure and an almost non-existent police force.
The 150 permanent residents are afraid since 340 migrants and refugees arrived on the island.
Agathonisi mayor Evangelos Kottoros called on the Greek state for immediate assistance. “There are 340 people on the island who cannot leave. Since there is no place for them to stay, they sleep wherever they can find a place, on the streets. Their number is double the number of permanent residents,” he said.
The small island is located near the island of Samos and is part of the Natura 2000 as a refuge.
Another 2,172 refugees arrive in Piraeus port

The same ship arrived in Piraeus on Thursday morning at 9 am, carrying some 2,500 Syrian refugees that had crossed the border and reached the Greek islands of Kos, Kalymnos, Leros and Lesvos.
