Former Greek National Team Football Director Criticizes Hellenic Football Federation

karagounisIn an interview to Greek radio on Tuesday, Giorgos Karagounis, who was until recently Football Director of the Men’s Greek National Team, revealed his disappointment with the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO).
On August 7, it was announced that EPO decided to terminate Karagounis’ contract while head coach Sergio Markarian was replaced by interim coach Kostas Tsanas.
“The most important thing is that 20 days have passed since this first started and I have not been informed by anybody on anything. I keep seeing my professional dignity being tarnished in the media and nobody has called me to inform me about anything. I have heard from the media that there is a decision but I do not know anything officially. This is not consistent with my behavior over the years, especially toward the national team that I have served for 24 years,” said Karagounis, who is the most capped player in the history of the country’s national football team with 139 appearances.
Karagounis, who is also a former captain of the Greek National Team, denied knowing anything about rumors that Markarian complained to EPO about Karagounis’ conduct during his role as a Football Director.
“Have you heard Mr. Markarian himself say such things? Nor has anyone told me such things. Reports can say various things to taint my professional dignity but no one has spoken to me,” he noted.
The former captain also said that he would have considered himself a traitor if he had not accepted the Football Director’s role in the Greek National Football Team when he was offered the position.
