Kostas Tsanas Becomes Greek National Team Interim Coach

pegasus_o_1041_106023441Greece’s U-21 coach Kostas Tsanas was appointed by the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) as the country’s national team interim coach, replacing Uruguayan Sergio Markarian.
Markarian resigned after five disappointing months at the helm, following a humiliating defeat in the Faroe Islands during a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying match. Initially, EPO did not accept his resignation.
This is the second time that Tsanas is serving as interim coach for the Greek national football team. In 2014, he had replaced Italian Claudio Ranieri who had also lost to the Faroe Islands at home.
EPO also announced on Friday the termination of Giorgos Karagounis as Football Director. The national team’s former captain and one of the Euro 2004 winners had served the national team for one year and was the one who suggested hiring Markarian.
Greece has four more qualifying games for the Euro 2016. However, they have only gathered two points in six matches, meaning that they have no chance whatsoever. They will play against Finland at home on September 4, with Tsanas most probably seating at the bench.
