J.K. Simmons on His New Movie Filmed in Greece [Video]

J.K. Simmons and Christopher Papakaliatis

Oscar nominated actor J.K. Simmons talks exclusively about his new movie “Worlds Apart” that was filmed in Greece right after “Whiplash.” The movie was directed by acclaimed Greek director and actor Christopher Papakaliatis and is expected to hit theaters in 2015.

Watch the interview below:

“Worlds Apart” consists of three separate narratives, each following a love story between a foreigner and a Greek. Each story represents a different generation falling in love during a time of socioeconomic turmoil that dominates Southern Europe as a whole, only to connect as a single story in the end.

The movie’s cast includes Andrea Osvart, Maria Kavogianni and Tawfeek Barhom (among others), while the story follows the characters’ difficult path to love and the complications their worlds have. Despite its harsh realities, Greece is still a place where truth, beauty and humanity exist. A place where love can thrive even in the darkest hour.

Each narrative is interrupted during its climactic point, passing on the torch to the next one, leaving each story unresolved. It is in the final part of the story where the resolution for all three unfolds, revealing that the characters are connected and their life decisions vitally affect each other.

The location and the era in which the story takes place is influenced by the current political climate in South Europe and particularly the constant unemployment growth, the accelerating numbers of incoming illegal immigrants and the rise of a violent, extremist (neo-Nazi like) sociopolitical party in Greece.

The story however, surpasses the culture-specific elements by thematizing love, fear, family values and other aspects of life relatable in a universal level, crossing cultural and age barriers, thus appealing to an international audience.

“Worlds Apart” director and star Christopher Papakaliatis was born and raised in Athens, Greece, in 1974. His father, Manuel Papakaliatis, was born and raised in Crete while his mother, Villy Malamis, is from South Africa. Christopher was first cast at the age of 16 for a role in a TV drama series and since then is considered one of Greece’s best auteurs. Last year he directed and starred in the box-office hit “What if…”
