Greek Holiday Destinations 90% Full Despite Crisis

Christmas_at_Nymfaio,_FlorinaGreeks will fill up all popular holiday destinations this season, despite the economic crisis, according to an Imerisia newspaper report.
The most popular winter and holiday destinations in Greece already show bookings exceeding 80 percent on average. Hoteliers estimate that last-minute bookings will bring hotels to almost full capacity. They also say that bookings already exceed 2013 figures.
Less than two weeks before Christmas, figures from the most favored holiday destinations are most promising for the industry. With prices remaining the same compared to last year and special offers for extended stay, holiday favorites expect bookings to exceed 90 percent.
Specifically, in Arachova in Boeotia, 85 percent of accommodations are already booked for Christmas and 75 percent for New Year’s.  In Ioannina, western Greece, 85 percent are booked so far for both holidays. In the Magnesia-Pilion area in central Greece, occupancy exceeds 80 percent for Christmas — expected to reach 90 percent — and 70 percent for New Year’s.
In Kalavryta, Peloponnese, 80 percent of accommodations are already booked and hoteliers expect full capacity by Christmas Eve. In Arcadia, Peloponnese, it is only 60 percent now but they expect 90 percent. Finally, in Drama, northern Greece, occupancy is at 60 percent now but an 80 percent occupancy is expected.
According to the report, hoteliers are confident that there will be no cancellations in the holiday season due to political developments and the current climate of political instability. However, they are afraid that snap elections in late January or early February will greatly affect the winter tourism season.
