The Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Bard Association and the Embassy of Greece will present the Trial of Lysistrata at the Lansburgh Theatre, Washington D.C., at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 24. The event will be followed by a cocktail reception at Sidney Harman Hall with Christos P. Panagopoulos, Ambassador of Greece to the U.S.A.
Under the auspices of the Embassy of Greece, a special session of the Supreme Court of Athens will convene to hear the case of the People vs Lysistrata. Often called the first feminist, Lysistrata rallied the enemy’s women against her own city, organized her fellow women against their own men, even took possession of the state treasury, all in order to stop a war that she thought unjust. Traitor or Heroine? The questions are just as timely today as they were in 5th Century BC. On November 24, at the Lansburgh Theatre, the arguments will be laid out from her and the City of Athens. The audience will then decide her guilt or innocence, voting alongside some of the most distinguished judges in the country.
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito will preside and will be accompanied by Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Counsels for Lysistrata, the Defendant, will be Lori Alvino McGill of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP and Christina Guerola Sarchio of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, LLP. Counsels for Athens, the Prosecution, will be Stewart Baker and Pantelis Michalopoulos of Steptoe & Johnson, LLP. The argument and discussion will be moderated by Abbe D. Lowell of Chadbourne & Parke, LLP. Ambassador in Attendance will be Christos P. Panagopoulos, Ambassador of Greece to the U.S.A.
The event is sponsored by the Embassy of Greece and the Bard Association, Shakespeare Theatre Company’s affinity group for Washington’s legal community.
Tickets go on sale on Wednesday, October 22, to Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Bard Association members; Wednesday, October 29, to Shakespeare Theatre Company subscribers and donors; and Wednesday, November 5, to the general public.
