Installation for Access of Disabled People to the Sea Removed

disabled peopleBathers on the beach of Nea Makri, northeastern Attica, prevented the installation of a system that enables people with disabilities to have independent access to the sea. “It bothers us,” “it is useless, no one uses it,” they said.
The innovative and awarded SEATRAC system has already been installed in more than 20 beaches in Greece and Cyprus.
It is a mechanism consisting of rails, on which a specially designed seat is transferring the user from the beach straight into the water. Therefore , people with mobility problems can enjoy the sea without any other assistance.
This year, the manufacturer TOBEA offered free installation of three SEATRAC systems in Attica beaches. However, the citizens of Nea Makri reacted against the installation of the system on the beach.  Employees of TOBEA reported that Nea Makri residents had made a complaint for the installation of the system. The  bathers had raised strong protests claiming that SEATRAC bothers  them and that it is useless.
Finally the officers of Nea Makri Coast Guard Authority, after the complaints of local residents, prevented the completion of the installation.
