Cyprus Mourns the Loss of Painter Stass Paraskos

stass paraskosCypriot artist Stass Paraskos and founder of the Cyprus College of Art passed away on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 81 in Paphos, as it was announced by the College.
The Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus in a statement expressed its deep sorrow for the sudden death of Stass Paraskos, while announcing that the funeral will take place with public expenses next Saturday, March 8. The Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus, Kyriacos Kenevezos will be giving the eulogy. “Taking under consideration his long and multifaceted contribution to the development and shaping of modern Cypriot culture, in October 2005, the Ministry of Education and Culture honored Stass Paraskos with the Prize of Excellence in Arts,” read the Ministry’s statement.
Stass Paraskos was born in Anafotia in Larnaca in 1933. In 1953 he moved to Britain where he attended painting classes at the College of Fine Arts in Leeds. His apprenticeship with artists of the postwar period in combination with his personal work and dedication made him a painting artist and teacher in the artistic and academic world of Great Britain. His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions and his works can be found in several private collections in Cyprus and abroad.
In addition to his artistic contribution to painting and sculpture, Stass Paraskos taught at various universities and schools such as the College of Fine Arts in Leeds, Leicester University and the Institute of Design in Kent, where he was director of the painting  school. In 1969 he founded the Cyprus College of Art in Famagusta. After the Turkish invasion in 1974, he first moved in Kato Paphos and in 1985 he moved to the village of Lemba in Paphos, where he stayed until the end of his life.
