Australian Prime Minister Attends Greek Community’s Festival

For the second time in three months, the Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott was present at the events of the Greeks in Australia. After attending the Festival “Antipodes” in Melbourne, Mr. Abbott officially launched today the Greek Festival of Sydney in Darling Harbor. It is estimated that tens of thousands of people attended the two-day event which was held in the city centre.

The program included a plethora of music events, food stands as well as the famous singer Konstantina. Several significant figures of the Australian political scene, such as the leader of the major opposition party Tony Burke, attended the Greek Festival.

The Greek Festival of Sydney which has been going on for 32 years in a row is organized by the Greek Community. The Festival includes more than thirty events most of which will take place in February, March and April and some of them are expected to last for several months.

This year’s program includes events for the 400 years since the death of Dominikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco), the presentation of a book on Cavafy, the presentation of research on the Greek communities from Albania to Ukraine and many other events.

The President of the Greek Community Mr. Harris Danalis stated that one of the organization’s basic objectives is to nourish and promote the Greek civilization and language.
