‘Thor’ Actor Tom Hiddleston Studied Greek While Pursuing Acting

TomHiddlestonAs the Marvel sequel “Thor: The Dark World” gets ready to hit theaters Friday, Nov. 8, we’re learning more about Loki a.k.a. Tom Hiddleston, including the fact that he studied – and speaks – Greek!

Hiddleston, who reprises his role as the super villain/adoptive brother of Thor in the upcoming film, studied Latin and Greek at Cambridge University while also pursuing his acting interests. In a recent interview, the 32-year-old said that he kept on with his degree even as his career began to take off because he “worked too hard to get there and miss out.” And it looks like it all worked out — both in acting, and in mastering languages. Not only is the English thespian an avid fan of Greek mythology (he once admitted that he’d love to play Dionysus or Odysseus), but the “Thor 2” star also speaks Spanish, French and Greek rather fluently.

In a past interview with Greek outlet Cinemag, Hiddleston gave his “War Horse” co-star Benedict Cumberbatch a lesson in the language while reciting Sophocles’ Electra (Hiddleston performed the play on-stage in ancient Greek when he attended Cambridge). Take a listen at around the 1:11 mark:

In the meantime, we’ll be keeping an eye out on Tom in hopes that he’ll get the chance to play one of those Greek gods soon.
