Ex-Minister Mantelis Tried Over Siemens Scandal

mantelis_390_1304Greece’s crackdown on corruption is continuing with the prosecution of former Transport Minister Tasos Mantelis, along with another four people on charges of being involved in the Siemens bribery scandal, according to the decision of the Council of Appeals Court Judges on Sept. 13.
Mantelis faces charges of accepting bribes and money laundering. The sum is said to be 450,000 German marks (230,000 euros) which prosecutors said he received in two installments between 1998 and 2000.
His co-defendants are charged with the same offense which was linked to the signing of the contract 8002 between the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE) and the German company for the digitization of its centers, in 1997.
Mantelis denied all wrongdoing and said the money was a campaign donation although he held an appointed office. The co-defendants are Giorgos Tsougranis, Antonia Markou, Ilias Georgiou and Aristides Mantas.
