Calombaris Impressed by Greek Chefs

Taste_CalombarisGeorge Calombaris, Greek-Australian chef and judge of the Network Ten series MasterChef Australia, stated he is impressed by the Greek chefs he often hires in his restaurants.

George Calombaris told Neos Kosmos: “Every day I receive 40 CV’s from Greek chefs. In many cases, Greek chefs’ skills and qualifications are so impressive that I cannot skip them easily. Leave alone that because they want to build a better life in Australia they have more passion and enthusiasm for their work”.

Calombaris was born and raised in Melbourne, but his education was strictly Greek.

At the moment, except for Masterchef, he is opening a new restaurant named Gazi which will serve Greek street food and cocktails.

“My inspiration actually comes from what is called in Greece “vromiko=dirty” food, food that you buy in the street after a night in nightclubs. Many people don’t know about this delicious paradise hidden in many Athens corners. It is a divine experience to eat scrambled eggs with sausage at 23:30 in the evening in a tiny place, somewhere in Athens. Unforgettable taste and experience. At the end of this month I will travel to Greece and I am looking forward to living again a moment like that with could company and beer in hands,” Calombaris said.

The staff in his restaurants reaches some hundreds of employees. And because not all of them are Greek, once every two weeks the staff attends Greek language lessons. But they do not only learn the language. They also learn about the Greek culture, Greek food, and everything important for one to understand what Greek, Greek hospitality, Greek lifestyle mean,
