English Love Cypriot Treat Haloumi

haloumiCypriot cheese, haloumi, is being more and more popular in Britain, where it is consumed more than any other country outside its homeland. Sweden is said to be the second in devouring the semi-hard delicious cheese that can even fried.

It was almost unknown in England until about a decade ago and now is rising in popularity quickly. Greek cheese sales, including feta, are also soaring in the UK.

Sales of their cheese varieties, such as Halloumi and Feta cheese are the fastest growing in UK. Cheese specialist Neil Burchell has said: “It’s easy to see why haloumi has done so well – it’s delicious fried, grilled or barbecued.” The Tesco supermarket chain said it sales of haloumi are up 132 percent.

Halloumi is an unripened brined cheese made from a mixture of goats’ and sheep milk, and sometimes also cows’ milk. It has a high melting point and so can easily be fried or grilled. Haloumi is set with rennet and is unusual in that no acid or acid-producing bacterium is used in its preparation.
