Τhe 33rd LA Weekly Theatre Awards, the annual critics’ awards established in 1979 by the LA Weekly for outstanding achievements in small theatre productions in Southern California, were presented this year under the theme of the first ancient Greek Awards held in Athens around 450 BC.
The host of the awards, held April 2, was Lost Moon Radio, a group of artists from LA. The two hour long event was held at Avalon in Hollywood, and presented more than 30 awards to 99 productions from the previous year.
Directed by Lauren Ludwig, the theme of this year’s event involved Dionysus, with his “followers” watching the awards from the balcony while performers and some 700 people in the standing crowd were all wearing ancient Greek clothing or accessories.
The music of Rich Ramberg, Dylan Ris and Michael Wells dressed up the event with their music, performed by a band of seven musicians.
“Small Engine Repair” by Rogue Machine at Theatre/Theater won Production of the Year, while director Bernardo Bernardo was the winner in the Direction category for his work on “The Romance of Magno Rubio.” “Re-Animator The Musical” by Red Hen Productions and Schramm Group LLC won in several different categories, including Musical of the Year, Direction of a Musical (Director Stuart Gordon), Musical Ensemble, Original Music (by Marc Nutter) and Adaptation and Blood Effects.
