Australia Supports Greece with Protest Rallies Against Austerity Measures

The Australian Labour Movement and the Greek-Australian Community asked their government to condemn the strict austerity measures that are being forced onto Greece.

They point out their views in their most recent statement (March 22), in which it’s being stressed that: “The continuing economic crisis in Greece is not an isolated phenomenon peculiar to one country. It is symptomatic of a broader systemic economic failure in the global economy and in particular, the European Union”. They ask the European Union, the Greek government and the global financial institutions to “abandon the fiscal austerity program that is strangling the Greek economy and its people”, and to “adopt an expansionary investment program to break the vicious downward spiral and provide jobs and hope to an increasingly desperate people.”

Protest rallies were held for that reason yesterday in front of the Consulates of Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. “Today’s protests aim at breaking the myth that Greek citizens are responsible for the economic crisis in Greece, because of the luxurious life they’ve been having” explained the secretary of the South Coast of NSW Union.
