"Christ in Greece Today" Exhibition by Makis Varlamis at the Museum of Byzantine Culture

The Greek painter, sculptor, architect and pedagogue Makis Varlamis, from Veria, whose talent has been internationally acknowledged, has been creating beautiful works of art during the past 50 years in Austria, ‘his small Greece’, as he calls it. He established the Kunstmuseum Waldviertel, one of the biggest museums in Austria and was honored for his artistic contribution in 2009.  He has also worked as a professor at the Architecture School of the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and as a visiting professor in other European universities.
The talented man has been in Thessaloniki during the last few days presenting his “Christ in Greece Today” to the eager audience. The exhibition consists of 350 works of big proportions.
The project is the fruit of ten years of hard work, as he explains, and aims at showing two billion Christians that they are speaking “a common language”
The exhibition was originally presented last year in the centre of Austria’s capital city, where people call him a “hardcore” Greek, for which he is really proud.
While the Christ exhibition has started its own trip across Europe, making the first stop in Thessaloniki, at the Museum of Byzantine Culture, Mr. Varlamis has already begun working on his new collection. With this collection, he wants to “go deep in the very memories of Hellenism”. He is also preparing a project on Apostle Paul’s tour in Greece.
