Greek Humanitarian and Cultural Work Recognized in Vienna

Optimistic and hopeful messages for a better future were sent out from the Old Town Hall of Vienna during a grandiose event co-organized by the “George Best Costacos Cultural and Cancer Research Foundation” and the “Albert Schweitzer Foundation”.

Geek individuals were presented with the George Best Costacos Awards 2011 for their charity work in 2011. More particularly, the special distinction was presented to the recently deceased Metropolitan Michael of Austria and Exarch of Hungary for his enormous contribution and help provided to the Greek communities of both countries over the years.

An honored distinction was awarded to Greek Vice Mayor and Deputy Governor of the federal state of Vienna Mrs. Maria Vasilakou for her political engagement and her contribution to the local administrative authorities. The same award was also presented to recognized psychiatrist and former vice president of the intercultural association “Macedonia” Mr. Giorgos Siakos for his efforts of bringing Greek-Austrian relations to a different level, and the president of the “Albert Schweitzer Foundation” Mr. Georg Steiner for his yearlong and tremendous humanitarian work through the Foundation.

“George Best Costacos Cultural and Cancer Research Foundation” is located in NY and Athens and is dedicated to the fight against brain cancer. The foundation is named after the talented Greek athlete and artist, who died from the incurable disease. “Albert Schweitzer Foundation” is named after the renowned doctor and philosopher who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952.

The Albert Schweitzer Foundation is celebrating this year 30 years from its establishment and honored George Costacos with the golden medal of Humanitarian Worth, which was received by the deceased man’s brother Mr. Nikos Costacos. George Costacos died on November 17, 2008.

A golden medal was additionally awarded to actress and children book author Mrs. Mari Kyriakou for her charity work promoted through her TV show, while the Golden medal of Arts and Science was given to two prominent Greek artists living abroad, coat of arms specialist Mr. Ioannis Vlazakis and sculptor Mr. Nikos Floros.

The event included a classic music concert with works from Bach and Constantinides, which were performed by prominent Greek pianist Anastasios Strikos, violinist Dimitris Karakantas, tenor Nikolaos Spanos.
