British actor Patrick Stewart, who became internationally famous for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men, has died at 86. Stewart passed away Wednesday, October 28, at his home in Los Angeles after living with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His longtime spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, confirmed his death Thursday.

A statement described his illness as a “brief and poignant journey.” His family and friends surrounded him during his final days. The actor’s death prompted tributes from Hollywood stars, longtime colleagues and theater organizations, who remembered his talent and contributions to entertainment.

Ian McKellen and Hollywood stars pay tribute to Patrick Stewart

Ian McKellen, Stewart’s close friend and X-Men co-star, described him as the “most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic.” McKellen recalled advising Stewart against accepting the role of Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He feared the television series could affect his friend’s theater career. Stewart took the role anyway, a decision McKellen later celebrated.

The two actors maintained a close friendship for decades. They appeared together in the X-Men films and shared the stage in Waiting for Godot. McKellen also officiated Stewart’s wedding in 2013.

William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek series, praised Stewart’s intelligence and humanity. Hugh Jackman, who starred alongside Stewart in X-Men, remembered him as “one of the greats.” Actor and television creator Seth MacFarlane also honored Stewart, recalling his humor and ability to bring even simple dialogue to life. The Royal Shakespeare Company described Stewart as a “colossus of stage and screen.”

From Shakespeare to Star Trek and X-Men

Born July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, Yorkshire, Stewart grew up in a working-class family. His mother worked in a textile factory, while his father served in the British Army. Stewart developed an interest in acting after a schoolteacher introduced him to Shakespeare. He later trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966. His theater career included major Shakespearean roles in Hamlet, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra.

Stewart achieved worldwide recognition in 1987 when he began playing Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The series also featured Greek-British actress Marina Sirtis, who portrayed Counselor Deanna Troi. He continued portraying Picard in several films and returned for the television series Star Trek: Picard, which ended in 2023. He later introduced himself to another generation of audiences as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films.

His achievements included Laurence Olivier Awards, a Grammy Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in 2010 for his services to drama.

Patrick Stewart’s work against domestic violence

Outside acting, Stewart was an outspoken advocate for survivors of domestic violence. He became an ambassador for the British charity Refuge in 2007, drawing on painful experiences from his childhood. Stewart previously described witnessing his father physically abuse his mother after returning from World War II. He later used his public profile to raise awareness of domestic violence and encourage survivors to seek support.

Hetti Barkworth-Nanton, chairwoman of Refuge’s board of trustees, praised his commitment to the cause. She said Stewart had dedicated his advocacy to his mother’s memory. Despite his age, Stewart remained interested in new acting opportunities. In a July 2026 interview, he said he had no plans to retire and continued to enjoy taking on challenging roles. Stewart is survived by his wife, singer Sunny Ozell, and his two children, Daniel and Sophia.
