Aristotle University of Thessaloniki launched Greece’s first foreign-language (English) undergraduate dentistry degree.

The new Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program marks a massive shift toward internationalization within the Greek public university network. This strategic initiative allows domestic universities to attract global academic talent and build partnerships with prestigious international institutions.

Opening Greek higher education to the world

The introduction of the English-language BDS degree establishes a vital milestone for public education in Greece. Traditionally, Greek public universities offered undergraduate coursework exclusively in the domestic language. The new framework successfully breaks this barrier to reach a broader global audience.

Deputy Education Minister Nikos Papaioannou attended the official launch ceremony on Friday. Papaioannou emphasized that internationalization extends far beyond merely recruiting paying students from other countries. The strategic shift aims to expand professional development opportunities for graduates.

The aim is  to raise the global profile of Greek higher education through these targeted programs. Furthermore, the curriculum in Thessaloniki utilizes the Aristotle university’s deep academic traditions and advanced dental infrastructure.

Upgrading Campus security and academic infrastructure

The administrative transition of the university landscape involves a multi-decade timeline of structural changes. Institutional records show a continuous push toward updating security protocols, expanding campus footprints, and improving student safety features.

A primary structural milestone involved the formal evacuation of a building section within the Department of Biology.

Concurrently, the university management plans to allocate regular funding toward teaching quality, student support networks, and scientific laboratories. These planned facility upgrades aim to ensure that the new dental branch meets standard international educational requirements.
