Testimony from relatives of victims and injured survivors of the Tempi train disaster will resume Monday, October 19, as court proceedings continue over the deadly railway collision.
Father Describes Conditions at Crash Site
Panos Routsis, father of Denis Routsis, who died in the crash, testified during Wednesday’s hearing and subsequently answered questions from his attorney, Zoe Konstantopoulou.
Routsis described the conditions he encountered when he arrived at the crash site in the early hours following the collision.
“What I saw was as if I were in hell. When I arrived there at 3 or 4 in the morning, I saw intense flames and noticed a strange smell,” he told the court.
“We have many unanswered questions. At some point, we must learn the truth,” Panos Routsis added.
Further Testimony Pending
Routsis’ testimony is expected to be completed at a subsequent hearing.
The court has yet to hear testimony from Denis Routsis’ mother and sister, who are also expected to appear as proceedings continue.
The trial resumed on September 7, with testimony from victims’ relatives and survivors forming a central part of the proceedings.
After several months of preliminary hearings, the court formally heard the charges against 36 defendants in late July before adjourning for its summer recess.
The defendants include former railway officials and employees accused of offenses related to the safety failures surrounding the collision.
