Greece’s UEFA Nations League football (soccer) match against Germany finished 0–0 on Sunday, October 4, as Greece maintained its unbeaten start to the competition and remained at the top of League A Group 2.

The teams met just one week after Greece’s historic 1–0 victory in Augsburg. Dimitrios Kourbelis scored the decisive goal in that September 27 encounter, securing Greece’s first-ever victory over Germany and providing an early highlight of its campaign.

Greece had opened its Nations League campaign with a 2–1 away victory over Serbia on September 24. The win over Germany three days later gave Jovanović’s side six points from its first two matches, before the draw against the Netherlands took the total to seven.

With the draw against Germany, Greece has now collected eight points from a possible 12 and remains unbeaten with two matches left in the group stage. Greece travels to face the Netherlands on November 13 before completing its League A Group 2 campaign at home against Serbia on November 16.

Greece’s strong start in League A Group 2

Greece entered Sunday’s game with seven points from its opening three matches. A 2–1 away victory over Serbia was followed by the win in Germany and a 2–2 draw with the Netherlands at Toumba on October 1.

Against the Dutch, Greece established a two-goal halftime lead through Fotis Ioannidis and Georgios Masouras. The visitors responded after the break, with Virgil van Dijk scoring before Tijjani Reijnders equalized late in the match.

Those results left Greece leading the group before the fourth round, ahead of the Netherlands on five points and Germany on four. Serbia had yet to collect a point.

Germany approached the return fixture after beating Serbia 2–0 on October 1. That result followed a 1–1 draw with the Netherlands and the home defeat to Greece, giving the German side its first victory of the group stage.

From promotion to Europe’s top division

Greece earned its place in League A with a 3–0 victory over Scotland at Hampden Park in March 2025. The result overturned a first-leg deficit and secured promotion through a 3–1 aggregate win.

Giannis Konstantelias, Konstantinos Karetsas and Christos Tzolis scored in Glasgow, helping Greece move into the top tier of the UEFA Nations League.

The Germany fixture completed Greece’s fourth group match within an 11-day period, following visits to Serbia and Germany and the home meeting with the Netherlands.

Greece’s remaining league-phase fixtures are scheduled for November: away against the Netherlands on November 13 and at home against Serbia on November 16. Those matches will complete its six-game group campaign and determine its final position in League A Group 2.
