A Russian strike destroyed apartments in a nine-story residential building in Kharkiv early Monday, September 28, 2026, with the reported number of injured rising to 38, including 10 children, by midday.
The attack struck the Saltivskyi district of the northeastern Ukrainian city at about 4 a.m. local time. Emergency workers rescued 32 people from the damaged building and searched the lower floors for anyone still trapped, according to regional authorities.
Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov initially reported 25 injured, including ten children. The toll increased as more people sought medical assistance, with local outlet InfoCity reporting 38 patients in its 12:10 p.m. update.
Children Among Those Hospitalized
Early reports said the injured children ranged in age from three to 15. Two boys, ages eight and 12, were taken to a hospital, while other children received treatment at the scene. Several victims also suffered acute stress reactions.
InfoCity subsequently reported that a 43-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl were hospitalized with blast injuries. Its updated count included people who had sought medical assistance following the strike.
The destruction extended beyond the building that took the direct hit. Syniehubov reported damage to five apartment buildings, 15 cars, a civilian business, six private houses, four outbuildings and a store in Kharkiv.
Kharkiv has faced repeated Russian strikes since the full-scale invasion began. Monday’s attack again left emergency crews clearing debris from a residential building as police and medical teams assisted residents.
Investigators Examine the Weapon Used
Initial reports described guided aerial bomb strikes on Kharkiv’s Saltivskyi and Kyivskyi districts. The precise weapon used against the apartment building remained under investigation.
UNN reported that law enforcement officials were considering a UMPB-5 munition as a preliminary possibility. That assessment had not been conclusively established.
Wider Attacks Across Ukraine
The Kharkiv strike came during a broader wave of Russian attacks overnight and into Monday morning. Four people were reported injured in Kyiv, while preliminary figures indicated that two others were hurt in Odesa.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said two people had been killed in the Kyiv region, including an Azerbaijani citizen, and dozens had been injured across the country.
In his morning statement, Zelenskyy reported strikes on residential buildings in the Sumy, Rivne, Kharkiv and Odesa regions. He also said critical infrastructure had been attacked in Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia.
Zelenskyy called on Ukraine’s partners to provide additional air defense systems, energy assistance and support covering budget shortfalls, describing those measures as practical help needed to strengthen the country’s ability to withstand the attacks.
