Germany coach Jürgen Klopp praised the quality and creativity of Greece’s national soccer team ahead of their Nations League meeting on Sunday, suggesting its players could represent a golden generation, according to remarks reported by Sport-FM.
The teams meet in Augsburg on September 27, with kickoff at 8:45 p.m. local time, or 9:45 p.m. in Greece. The match will be Klopp’s first home international since taking charge of Germany in August.
Greece enters the fixture after a 2–1 away victory over Serbia on September 24. Germany began its campaign with a 1–1 draw against the Netherlands in Amsterdam, leaving Klopp still seeking his first win as national coach.
Klopp Praises Greece’s Talent and Teamwork
Jürgen Klopp described the Greek squad as “a great generation, perhaps the golden generation of Greek football.” He pointed to the combination of individual ability, creativity and collective effort, warning that Germany would have to work hard to secure a result.
The assessment was qualified rather than absolute: Klopp praised Greece’s potential while noting that its results before the latest match had not fully reflected the quality he saw in his analysis. His comments came ahead of Saturday’s press conference in Herzogenaurach, where Germany has been preparing for the fixture.
Klopp also singled out Kostas Tsimikas for praise. He spoke warmly about their relationship and previous work together, expressed a wish to collaborate again and highlighted the left back’s cross for Greece’s winning goal against Serbia.
Germany Adjusts Squad Before Greece Test
Germany’s preparations have included changes in attack. Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz left the squad with muscle injuries following the Netherlands fixture. Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt joined earlier than originally planned and participated in Saturday’s final training session.
Reflecting on his debut, Klopp praised Germany’s intensity and commitment but acknowledged that his players had surrendered too much control as the Netherlands grew stronger. He said the team needed time to become more comfortable with its tactical approach.
Sunday’s game is the first of two meetings between Germany and Greece during this international window. Greece will host the Netherlands on October 1 before facing Germany again in Thessaloniki on October 4.
