One of the driest places on Earth has suddenly turned into a sea of flowers.
Chile’s Atacama Desert is experiencing a spectacular “Desierto Florido,” or Flowering Desert, after unusually heavy winter rainfall triggered dormant seeds and bulbs beneath the dry soil.
The phenomenon is now spreading across parts of the Atacama region, with purple, white and other colorful wildflowers transforming the normally barren landscape.
Seeds Waiting Beneath the Desert
The Atacama holds seeds and underground bulbs that can remain dormant for years. When enough rain reaches the soil, they can germinate and produce flowers within a matter of weeks.
Scientists estimate that more than 200 plant species can take part in the flowering phenomenon. Many are native or endemic to the region, creating a temporary ecosystem that also supports insects and other wildlife.
The scale of this year’s bloom could become particularly impressive. Chile’s Atacama Regional Government expects flowering to expand through September and reach its greatest diversity and abundance around mid-October.
El Niño Is Not the Whole Story
The spectacular bloom has been linked in recent reports to El Niño and the heavy rainfall affecting northern Chile.
However, researchers caution that El Niño alone does not explain the phenomenon. Rainfall is crucial, but temperature, sunlight, humidity and local conditions also determine whether the dormant plants emerge.
For a short time, the Atacama’s normally stark landscape becomes a vivid carpet of flowers—a reminder of the extraordinary life that can remain hidden beneath the desert surface.
