The Greek educational system is moving past its initial phase of unfettered trials and entering a structured, regulatory framework for the use of Artificial Intelligence. Following a year of pilot implementations involving tools like ChatGPT Edu in selected public and model schools, the state is establishing clear-cut rules.
The goal of this new national policy is to harness technology as a tool for modernization while safeguarding the guiding role of teachers and preserving the integrity of the learning process.
From Pilot Program to Institutional Reality
The initiative initially launched in roughly twenty schools, introducing students and educators to the capabilities of generative AI. While the early phase focused primarily on familiarity and digital skill-building, it quickly became apparent that a lack of regulations posed significant risks. In response, the relevant ministries formulated a comprehensive framework defining strict “red lines.”
According to these new guidelines, the use of AI applications remains entirely voluntary for both students and instructors, unconnected to grading or performance evaluation. Technology is expected to function supportively, enhancing rather than replacing human effort and critical thinking.
Strict Prohibitions and Data Protection
Particular emphasis is placed on protecting the personal data of minors. The creation of behavioral profiles and the input of sensitive information—such as names, photographs, voice samples, grades, or health data—into AI systems are strictly prohibited. Additionally, absolute bans are established for practices that undermine educational reliability:
• The production or dissemination of unauthorized deepfake content is banned.
• The generation of false bibliographic sources and nonexistent citations is prohibited.
• Fully automated evaluation of students or educators by algorithms is excluded.
Furthermore, the use of AI tools is forbidden during written exams and tests unless specific, controlled permission is granted by the instructor. Similarly, school assignments are not permitted to be produced entirely or largely by AI applications.
The Role of Coordinators and Ongoing Training
To ensure the smooth integration of these measures into daily school life, each school unit will establish the role of an “AI Use Coordinator.” This designated educator will monitor the proper implementation of these technologies and serve as the point of reference for security and data privacy matters.
Concurrently, the ministry is promoting targeted training programs for teachers, alongside mandatory informational sessions for parents and students at least once per academic year. Through these steps, Greece is working to build a secure digital education culture, demonstrating that technological progress can successfully align with pedagogical ethics.
