Greek-American U.S. Representative Chris Pappas won the Democratic primary for the open U.S. Senate seat in New Hampshire on Tuesday, comfortably defeating four primary challengers. His decisive victory sets up one of the most closely watched and critical general election showdowns in the country this November, an outcome that could ultimately determine the balance of power in the upper chamber of Congress.
A Decisive Primary Victory
Pappas, 46, who has represented New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District in the House since 2018, entered Tuesday’s contest as the commanding frontrunner, backed by substantial campaign fundraising and broad establishment support across the Granite State.
His primary competition came from progressive medical researcher Karishma Manzoor, who campaigned vigorously on expanding healthcare access and curbing corporate influence in national politics.
Despite late-stage momentum from progressive grassroots groups, primary projections swiftly called the race for Pappas as early returns underscored a wide lead among primary voters across the state’s ten counties. David Jarvis, Maxwell Saal, and Jon Vail also competed in the five-way primary.
High Stakes in the November General Election
The seat became open following veteran Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s decision to retire rather than seek re-election. Shaheen’s exit immediately transformed New Hampshire into a premier battleground on the national Senate map, attracting millions of dollars in outside spending.
In the November general election, Pappas will face Republican nominee and former U.S. Senator John E. Sununu, who secured the Republican nomination in a concurrent primary on Tuesday.
Addressing supporters shortly after the results were confirmed, Pappas outlined the central pillars of his general election campaign, emphasizing middle-class economic relief, reproductive freedom, and a defense of democratic institutions against far-right agendas. National Republicans, meanwhile, view New Hampshire as one of their strongest offensive pickup opportunities in New England to expand or retake control of the Senate.
