In a historic milestone rich with Olympic symbolism, Ancient Olympia and the Australian city of Gold Coast have officially signed a sister city agreement. The formal ceremony took place on Tuesday, September 8, in front of the iconic Temple of Hera—the exact sanctuary where the Olympic Flame is traditionally lit.
The signing served as the centerpiece of a two-day schedule of official events in the Peloponnese, forging a lasting partnership as Australia accelerates its preparations for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
A Symbolic Ceremony at the Temple of Hera
Before an assembly of civic leaders, diplomats, and international delegates, representatives from both municipalities pledged mutual support to champion Olympic values and cultural diplomacy. Notable attendees included Australian Ambassador to Greece Alison Duncan alongside local government officials from both regions.

By uniting the birthplace of the Games with a key 2032 host city, the agreement establishes a framework for technical collaboration, pre-Games cultural initiatives, and global campaigns spotlighting peace, fair play, and the Olympic Truce.
Cultural Exchanges and Educational Programs
Beyond sports collaboration, the partnership outlines multifaceted initiatives across education, tourism, and heritage management:
• Museum and Artifact Exhibitions: Plans are underway to host artifacts and educational exhibits from Ancient Olympia at Gold Coast cultural venues, offering Australian audiences direct access to classical Greek heritage.
