Greek dancer Naima Gerasopoulou and her Argentinian dancing partner Lucas Gauto are the winning couple crowned World Tango Champions 2026 in the Tango del Pista category at the Mundial de Tango BA which took place on Tuesday.

Their winning performance gained an enthusiastic applause by the audience who had gathered at the Gran Rex Theatre of Buenos Aires to watch the world’s best tango dancers compete for two titles; Tango del Pista and Seniors Tango del Pista champions.

The competition was also livestreamed for the whole world to watch.

Naima Gerasopoulou and Lucas Gauto appeared emotional as they celebrated their win, proudly waving the flags of Greece and Argentina after offering an encore of their winning choreography on stage.

“It was a night of emotion, talent, and passion for tango, in which more than 50 finalist couples from around the world met on the dance floor to give it their all,” the festival’s organisers wrote on Facebook.

“When I started in Greece, honestly, I didn’t even know what tango was. I didn’t even know it existed,” the Naima Gerasopoulou told Euronews. Since then, the Greek dancer has fallen “in love with tango.”

As about Lucas Gauto, he had been dreaming of winning the World Tango Champion title for twenty years.

The dancing duet are based in Athens, where they teach, put on shows, and participate in festivals. They have competed together six times at the Mundial de Tango BA competition and have always placed in the top ten before finally achieving their dream this year.

The Mundial de Tango BA continues today for the Tango Escenario category final.
