The sun has set again in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, marking the end of months of continuous daylight and the beginning of the Arctic settlement’s gradual transition toward winter darkness.
Longyearbyen, located at about 78 degrees north, experiences some of the most dramatic seasonal changes in daylight on Earth. During the summer, the sun remains above the horizon for months in a phenomenon known as the midnight sun. According to Visit Svalbard, the midnight sun period in Longyearbyen lasts approximately from April 19-20 until August 23, although the exact dates can vary depending on the astronomical definition used. The return of sunset in late August marks the beginning of a rapid change. Daylight will continue to shrink as the Arctic moves toward winter.
From months of daylight to months of darkness: The Svalbard sunset
The extreme changes are caused by the Earth’s 23.5-degree axial tilt. During the Northern Hemisphere’s summer, the North Pole and surrounding Arctic regions are tilted toward the sun. In areas above the Arctic Circle, this can keep the sun above the horizon continuously for days, weeks, or even months.
Because Svalbard lies much farther north than the Arctic Circle, the effect is particularly pronounced. But the cycle eventually reverses. As autumn advances, the sun spends less time above the horizon each day. By late October, Longyearbyen enters its polar night, when the sun no longer rises above the horizon. The polar night continues until around mid-February.
That does not mean that Longyearbyen experiences complete darkness around the clock for all those months. Even when the sun remains below the horizon, periods of twilight can brighten the sky around the middle of the day. The Moon, stars, northern lights and artificial lights can also illuminate the landscape.
A dramatic change in just a few months
For people living in Longyearbyen, the transition from the midnight sun to polar night is one of the defining rhythms of life in the Arctic. After months when the sun never fully disappears below the horizon, daylight now begins to retreat rapidly.
The contrast will become increasingly dramatic over the coming weeks. By late autumn, the sun will no longer rise, and the community will enter the long polar night of the Arctic winter. Then, after months below the horizon, the sun will eventually return in February.

Longyearbyen is the largest settlement and administrative center of the Svalbard archipelago, a Norwegian territory in the Arctic Ocean. It is also one of the world’s northernmost communities with a substantial permanent population. However, it is not technically the northernmost inhabited settlement on Earth. Ny-Ålesund, also on Svalbard, lies farther north and hosts an international research community.
Svalbard’s extraordinary cycle of light and darkness is a direct consequence of its location in the high Arctic. Within the space of a year, residents experience months of continuous daylight followed by months when the sun does not rise above the horizon. For the people of Longyearbyen, the recent sunset is therefore more than the end of a summer day. It is the first visible step toward the long Arctic winter.
