Konstantinos Tsoukalas, one of Greece’s most influential sociologists and public intellectuals, has died at the age of 89, leaving behind a body of work that helped shape the understanding of modern Greek society, politics and social structures.

Tsoukalas had an academic career spanning Greece, France, the United States and Mexico and was elected a full member of the Academy of Athens in 2025. He was professor emeritus at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and had also served as president of Greece’s National Centre for Social Research.

The Academy of Athens said it received news of his death with “deep sorrow and particular emotion,” describing Tsoukalas as an eminent scholar in sociology and social theory whose work left a lasting mark on Greek and international academic life.

A leading voice in the study of modern Greece

Born in Athens in 1937, Tsoukalas studied law at the University of Athens before continuing his studies in philosophy of law and sociology in Heidelberg and Munich, Paris and Yale.

His academic career took him abroad during a period when Greece itself was undergoing profound political and social change. From 1968 to 1985, he served as a professor of sociology at the University of Paris before returning to Greece, where he became a professor at the University of Athens’ Department of Political Science.

His research focused on the development of Greek society and the structures that shaped the modern Greek state. Through his work, Tsoukalas examined the relationship between politics, social classes, institutions and the historical forces that influenced Greece’s development.

He became one of the most prominent members of a generation of Greek scholars who sought to place Greece’s modern history within a wider European and international framework.

An international academic career

Alongside his positions in Paris and Athens, Tsoukalas taught and conducted research at universities in Europe, the United States and Mexico.

He served as a visiting professor at institutions including Princeton University and universities in Paris and Mexico City, while also teaching in the Department of Economics at the University of Athens.

His academic career was closely connected with Greece’s National Centre for Social Research, where he served as scientific director from 1981 to 1989. He later became president of its board, serving from 1993 to 1996.

Tsoukalas also held a number of positions connected with research, culture and public policy. He served as president of the Association of Greek Sociologists and participated in national and international bodies dealing with research, bioethics and culture.

Among other roles, he was a member of Greece’s National Bioethics Commission for more than a decade and served on the boards of institutions including the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the Hellenic Foundation for Culture.

From academia to public life

Although best known for his scholarship, Tsoukalas was also an active participant in public life.

He served as a state member of parliament with SYRIZA, bringing his long engagement with questions of Greek society and politics into the political arena.

That political role, however, represented only one chapter of a career defined primarily by academic research, teaching and intellectual debate.
