Greek cinema and television are mourning the death of actor, director, screenwriter and songwriter Nikos Kalogeropoulos, who died at the age of 74. His death was reported in Greece on August 9, 2026.
Kalogeropoulos built a career spanning film, television and theater and became particularly recognizable for roles in some of the most memorable Greek productions of the 1980s and later decades.
Born in Filiatra, Messenia, in 1952, Kalogeropoulos worked across several areas of the arts. In addition to acting, he wrote screenplays, directed, and worked as a poet and songwriter.
A Career in Greek Film and Television
Kalogeropoulos appeared in films including Learn, My Child, Your Letters (Mathe Paidi Mou Grammata), Loafing and Camouflage (Loufa kai Parallagi) and Rembetiko. He also became widely known to television audiences through the popular series Camping.
His performance in Learn, My Child, Your Letters brought him a special acting distinction at the Thessaloniki Film Festival. He subsequently won the festival’s Best Actor award for his role in Loafing and Camouflage, the 1984 military comedy directed by Nikos Perakis.
His film work continued over the following decades, including appearances in Rembetiko, En Plo, Arpa-Cola, Oniro Aristeris Nichtas and The Riders of Pylos. He also directed and wrote The Riders of Pylos, released in 2011.
A Distinctive Presence in Greek Culture
Beyond his acting career, Kalogeropoulos was known for his work in music and writing, making him a distinctive figure in modern Greek popular culture.
His performances in films such as Loafing and Camouflage and Rembetiko helped establish him as a familiar face to generations of Greek audiences, while his television work brought him to an even wider audience.
Greek media reporting his death described him as a multifaceted artist whose career extended well beyond acting.
Reports have said that Kalogeropoulos had battled cancer in recent years, although his cause of death should be treated cautiously unless confirmed by his family or an official statement.
