For millions of people, a beach umbrella is the first line of defense to protect oneself against the summer sun. In Greece, where the scorching Mediterranean sun draws visitors from around the world, it offers some respite on long days by the sea, but while an umbrella blocks direct sunlight, studies show it cannot fully protect you from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Evidence shows people can still get sunburned while sitting under a beach umbrella because UV radiation can reach the skin not only directly from the sun but also after being scattered through the atmosphere and reflected off nearby surfaces, including sand and seawater.
Study tests whether beach umbrellas sufficiently protect us from the sun
One of the most comprehensive studies on the topic was published in JAMA Dermatology in 2017. Researchers conducted a randomized clinical trial involving eighty-one volunteers at a Texas beach to compare the protection offered by a standard beach umbrella with that of SPF 100 sunscreen.
Participants spent approximately three and a half hours outdoors between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., a period when UV exposure is typically at its highest levels during the day. The findings challenged a common misconception. It was found that nearly 78 percent of participants who relied only on a beach umbrella developed sunburn compared with 25 percent of those using high-SPF sunscreen.
Although neither method completely prevented sunburn, sunscreen offered significantly greater protection than shade alone. The researchers concluded that a beach umbrella, by itself, is not sufficient to protect people from prolonged UV exposure.
Why you can still get sunburned in the shade under a beach umbrella
The explanation lies in the way ultraviolet radiation travels. Unlike visible sunlight, UV rays do not only reach the Earth’s surface in a direct path from the sun. A significant amount of UV radiation is scattered by molecules and particles in the atmosphere, creating what scientists call diffuse UV radiation. This scattered radiation can reach shaded areas from different directions, including beneath umbrellas.
At the beach, the risk is increased by reflection. Bright surfaces such as sand and seawater can reflect UV radiation back toward people sitting under an umbrella, adding to their overall exposure even when direct sunlight is blocked. As a result, the skin can still receive enough ultraviolet radiation to cause sunburn, even when a person spends much of the day in the shade.
The Mediterranean sun can actually be quite intense
The Mediterranean is known for its long, sunny summers, but this also means extended exposure to high levels of ultraviolet radiation. In Greece, the UV Index often reaches 8 to 10 during the summer months, while some islands and southern coastal areas can occasionally record levels of 11 or higher on clear days.
At these levels, people with fair skin may begin developing sunburn within 15 to 25 minutes without adequate protection, depending on their skin type and the intensity of UV radiation on a particular day. The combination of strong sunlight, clear skies, reflective beach surfaces, and long periods spent outdoors makes Greece one of Europe’s destinations where effective sun protection is especially important.
Not all beach umbrellas equally protect against the sun
The level of protection depends largely on the umbrella’s design and materials. Larger umbrellas generally provide a wider area of shade, while tightly woven, darker-colored fabrics tend to block more UV radiation than thinner or lighter materials.
Some modern beach umbrellas are made with fabrics that have an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating, which indicates that they are specifically designed to more effectively filter UV radiation and can thus better protect us from sun exposure than standard fabrics. Even these umbrellas, however, cannot completely eliminate exposure from scattered and reflected UV rays.

Dermatologists thus recommend keeping tabs on the daily UV index before going to the beach and continuing to use sunscreen, protective clothing, hats, sunglasses, and shade—even on partly cloudy days. Protecting yourself against the Mediterranean sun is about more than a beach umbrella
Dermatologists recommend viewing a beach umbrella as one layer of protection rather than a complete solution. For the strongest defense against harmful UV radiation, experts advise combining shade with:
- A broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30, applied generously and reapplied every two hours or after swimming
- Protective clothing or UV-protective swimwear
- A wide-brimmed hat
- UV-blocking sunglasses
- Limiting time in direct sunlight during peak UV hours whenever possible
Together, these measures provide significantly greater protection than relying on a beach umbrella alone.
