Toronto’s iconic Taste of the Danforth festival returns this week after a two-year hiatus, bringing Greek food, music, dance, and culture back to the heart of the city’s historic Greektown.
The three-day celebration, taking place from August 7 to 9, is expected to draw more than one million visitors to Danforth Avenue, reaffirming its status as Canada’s largest celebration of Greek culture and one of the biggest Greek festivals anywhere outside Greece.
Founded in 1993 by the Greektown on the Danforth Business Improvement Area, Taste of the Danforth has become a defining event for Toronto’s Greek Canadian community. Every summer, it transforms one of North America’s largest Greek neighborhoods into a vibrant showcase of Hellenic traditions, attracting visitors from across Canada and abroad.
This year’s festival marks an especially significant return after organizers were forced to suspend the event for the past two years because of financial challenges.
Canada supports Toronto’s Greek festival
The comeback has been supported by all three levels of government. The Government of Canada recently announced up to C$100,000 in funding through its Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Program, complementing earlier C$200,000 commitments from both the Ontario government and the City of Toronto to help revive the festival.
“This investment helps ensure one of Canada’s premier multicultural festivals continues to celebrate the rich heritage of the Greek Canadian community while bringing people together from every background,” federal officials said in announcing the funding.
Visitors can expect hundreds of food vendors serving traditional Greek favorites including souvlaki, gyros, spanakopita, loukoumades, and baklava, alongside live music, folk dancing, cooking demonstrations, cultural performances, and family-friendly activities.
Beyond its culinary appeal, Taste of the Danforth has become an important symbol of the Greek diaspora’s contribution to Canadian society. Toronto is home to one of the largest Greek communities outside Greece, and the annual festival has played a central role in preserving and promoting Greek traditions for more than three decades.
Its economic impact is also substantial, generating millions of dollars for local businesses while drawing tourists from across North America.
