A timelapse video from the summit of Mount Kithairon captured the rapid spread of a devastating wildfire in Greece from southern Boeotia toward Porto Germeno.
The footage follows the blaze minute by minute as flames sweep across the landscape, leaving extensive damage and vast burned areas behind.
Greece’s wildfire Advanced toward Porto Germeno
The timelapse shows flames spreading quickly across the southern slopes of Mount Kithairon during the early morning hours of Aug. 1. Several major fire fronts develop across a wide area before advancing toward the broader Porto Germeno region.
The extreme heat also produced pyrocumulus clouds, towering formations that develop when heat, smoke and gases from a wildfire rise rapidly into the atmosphere. Such clouds often accompany highly intense fires and may indicate extreme fire behavior.
Natural barriers help contain the Greece’s wildfire
The wildfire started in southern Boeotia and expanded rapidly under adverse weather conditions. It advanced toward Porto Germeno, reaching close to the shores of the Saronic Gulf.
Previously burned land, areas with little combustible vegetation, and the coastline eventually slowed the fire’s advance. These natural barriers helped contain the flames after the wildfire had swept across a large part of the region.
The entire progression was captured by a camera operated from the summit of Mount Kithairon by the Union of Amateur Radio Networks, known by its Greek acronym E.RA.DIK. With support from volunteers and supporters, the organization installed the camera and an accompanying weather station to track local weather conditions and monitor the mountain’s natural environment.
