The flames of the great Attica-Viotia fire were still burning for the fourth consecutive day on Monday morning after ground forces battled through the night in efforts to contain the multiple wildfire fronts.
Their efforts were focused on opening fire breaks using heavy machinery and a gargantuan effort to cut off the fire’s progress and stop it spreading, with firefighting concentrated mainly around the village of Agios Nektarios in Attica and Kandyli near Megara.
High-resolution satellite data reveals that combined wildfire damage across Viotia and Western Attica has surpassed 111,700 stremmata (over 27,600 acres) within its first 72 hours—an area nearly twice the size of Manhattan burned in just three days.
The rapid destruction officially qualifies the blaze as a megafire, according to an analysis of European Sentinel-2 satellite imagery by meteorologists Giorgos Kyros and Kostas Lagouvardos of the National Observatory of Athens (Meteo.gr / Copernicus EMS).

To put that footprint in perspective, the fire has consumed a landmass larger than the entire Walt Disney World resort complex and nearly equal to the city of San Francisco. Driven by fierce, shifting winds and difficult, mountainous terrain, the flames blew past the 100,000-stremmata benchmark inside 48 hours, overwhelming initial containment efforts.
Emergency operations faced critical dangers beyond the ground, highlighted by a harrowing mid-air collision between two firefighting helicopters operating near Psatha during intense suppression maneuvers.
Because the main front around Porto Germeno remained actively uncontained when the satellite passed overhead, experts emphasize that the 43-square-mile estimate is a preliminary baseline. The final tally of scorched forest and countryside is expected to rise as emergency crews struggle to tame the ongoing blaze.
