Ancient DNA Rewrites the Story of Rome’s Fall on the Empire’s Frontier

Ancient DNA revealed that the fall of Rome did not leave Pannonia deserted. Instead, the former frontier province changed gradually as new migrants arrived and local communities adapted over several centuries.

A study published in Science analyzed ancient DNA from 314 people buried between the third and sixth centuries AD. Researchers examined seven cemeteries across the Little Hungarian Plain, stretching from east of Lake Neusiedl into northwestern Hungary. They combined DNA evidence with burial artifacts and isotope analysis to trace ancestry, diet and mobility.

The findings show that the end of Roman rule was not marked by a single population replacing another. Instead, descendants of the Roman-era population continued living in the region while migrants from northern Europe settled there, creating diverse communities with changing social structures.

Migration reshaped, but did not replace, the population

For centuries, Pannonia was one of Rome’s most important frontier provinces. Forts, roads and cities such as Carnuntum and Arrabona, now Győr in Hungary, linked the region to the empire’s military and trade networks.

DNA from two Roman-era cemeteries showed a population with ancestry mainly linked to southern Europe, alongside smaller genetic connections to Asia and Africa. The evidence reflects the diversity of a province connected to the wider Roman world.

After Roman authority weakened in the early fifth century, towns declined and successive groups, including the Huns, Goths and Heruls, took control of the region. Even so, the local population remained.

The largest genetic shift appeared in five sixth-century cemeteries, where researchers found much higher levels of northern European ancestry. Historical records place this period alongside the rise of the Lombards in Pannonia. However, the DNA points to repeated waves of migration and long-term contact with northern communities rather than a single invasion.

Different communities followed different paths

The clearest contrast emerged between the cemeteries of Hegykő and Szeleste.

At Hegykő, closely related family groups dominated the community. Many members received rich burials with weapons and jewelry, while isotope evidence suggests they also enjoyed better diets. Researchers believe wealth and influence were concentrated within a small number of elite families.

Szeleste presented a different picture. Families often included people with both northern and southern ancestry, and researchers found fewer large biological family networks. The settlement appears to have been more socially integrated than its nearby counterpart.

A more complex story than Rome’s fall

The study also offers fresh insight into the Lombards’ origins. While it does not prove the group migrated directly from Scandinavia, researchers identified Scandinavian-related ancestry among some northern migrants. The evidence supports the idea that at least part of the population traced its roots farther north.

Researchers caution that DNA cannot determine ethnic identity. Instead, the findings suggest “Lombard” may have been as much a political identity as a biological one.

Rather than marking the sudden collapse of one civilization and its replacement by another, the cemeteries of Pannonia reveal a gradual transformation shaped by migration, family alliances and cultural integration. The result was the emergence of a new society built from both Roman traditions and incoming populations.
