The European Central Bank (ECB) has recently unveiled the final design proposals for the next generation of euro banknotes and launched a public consultation, giving Europeans the opportunity to help shape the appearance of the currency for the first time in more than two decades.
Among the most notable proposals for Greek audiences is a €5 banknote featuring legendary Greek soprano Maria Callas. Callas appears as one of the central figures in the “European Culture” theme, which celebrates iconic Europeans whose contributions have shaped the continent’s artistic and cultural heritage.
The redesign marks the first complete overhaul of euro banknotes since they were introduced in 2002 and forms part of the ECB’s long-term strategy to keep cash secure, accessible, and relevant in an increasingly digital economy.
Ten shortlisted proposals have been selected based on two themes chosen through an earlier public consultation: “European Culture” and “Rivers and Birds.” The cultural series features prominent historical figures paired with scenes highlighting Europe’s shared artistic and intellectual legacy, while the nature-themed series showcases Europe’s biodiversity through native birds and river landscapes.
“Euro banknotes are more than a means of payment—they are one of the most tangible expressions of Europe,” ECB President Christine Lagarde said in a statement. “Through designs that combine beauty and meaning, they will reinforce our shared identity.”
Maria Callas among Europe’s cultural icons
In the proposed cultural series, Maria Callas (1923–1977) is featured on the €5 banknote, recognizing her lasting influence on opera and classical music. Widely regarded as one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century, the Greek-American singer transformed operatic performance through her extraordinary vocal range and dramatic interpretations, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire audiences around the world.
The ECB has not yet selected a winning design, and Callas’ appearance on the €5 note remains one of several shortlisted proposals currently open to public feedback.
