Summer snow fell on Mount Olympus in northern Greece on July 24, while heavy rain and severe storms caused flooding, property damage and widespread transport disruption across the Athens metropolitan area.
The contrasting weather conditions affected different parts of Greece as temperatures dropped sharply at the country’s highest elevations and intense rainfall, strong winds, hail and frequent lightning swept through Athens and its surrounding districts.

Videos shared online showed snow covering parts of Mount Olympus despite the late-July date.

Although snowfall in late July is uncommon, temperatures near the mountain’s highest peaks can occasionally fall low enough to produce temporary snow cover.

Heavy rain floods major roads in Athens
In Athens, emergency crews responded to flooded roads, fallen trees, damaged infrastructure and reports of people trapped in elevators. Several major roads in and around the capital were temporarily closed after the intense rainfall caused water to accumulate.
Authorities shut sections of Piraeus Street near Chamosternas Street and Petrou Ralli Street. Piraeus Street is one of the main routes connecting central Athens with the port city of Piraeus.
Flooding was also reported on NATO Avenue in Ano Liosia, a western suburb of Athens, and around Fokionos Negri in the central neighborhood of Kypseli. The water level of the Kifisos River, which runs through the western part of the Athens metropolitan area, also rose following the downpour.

Fallen trees damage vehicles
Strong winds brought down trees and large branches in several Athens neighborhoods. In Sepolia, northwest of central Athens, a large tree fell onto utility cables and damaged several parked vehicles. Fallen trees were also reported on Alexandras Avenue and Petrou Ralli Street.
In Ilion, another western suburb, a tree fell onto a moving taxi. No one was trapped inside the vehicle. In Neo Psychiko, north of the city center, a damaged utility pole fell onto the roadway.

Scaffolding Collapse Disrupts Piraeus
In Piraeus, strong winds caused scaffolding attached to an apartment building to collapse onto Grigoriou Lambraki Street. The structure reportedly struck a passing motorcyclist, although no serious injuries were reported.
The collapse also damaged overhead equipment used by the tram network, forcing authorities to restrict services while repair crews worked at the scene.
Athens suburban rail services disrupted
Athens suburban rail services were affected after the storm damaged parts of the network’s electricity supply system.
Rail traffic and electrification were temporarily suspended on sections of the network, resulting in delays, cancellations and changes to scheduled services.
The suburban railway connects central Athens with Athens International Airport, Piraeus and several outlying areas of the capital region.
Severe weather prompts 940 fire service calls
The Hellenic Fire Service received 940 calls across Attica, Central Greece and Thessaly from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning. Most incidents involved fallen trees, hazardous objects and water-pumping operations.
In Attica, the Fire Service received 850 calls and carried out 251 tree removals, 59 removals of dangerous objects and 54 water-pumping operations. A further 60 calls were received in Central Greece and 30 in Thessaly.
