Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham acknowledged public frustration with politics and said his government would focus on delivering tangible improvements in people’s daily lives rather than short-term political gains. “We need to give people some breathing space now,” he said, referring to the financial pressures facing households across Britain.

Often nicknamed the “King of the North” for his advocacy on behalf of northern England during his tenure as mayor of Greater Manchester, Burnham built his national profile by campaigning for greater regional autonomy and investment outside London.
