Facebook experienced a widespread service disruption on Sunday, leaving thousands of users unable to access the social media platform as reports of technical problems surged across multiple countries.
Outage-monitoring websites recorded a sharp spike in user reports, while Greek Reporter independently confirmed through first-hand accounts from users in the US, Europe and Latin America that the disruption extended beyond a single region. Social media users elsewhere also reported similar issues in online forums, suggesting the outage affected Facebook on a broad scale.
Users Report Login and Access Problems
Many users said they were unable to log into Facebook, refresh their news feeds, load pages, or use other core features of the platform. Others reported intermittent connectivity, with the service working briefly before becoming unavailable again.
Downdetector, which tracks outages based on user-submitted reports, showed complaints rising rapidly as the disruption spread. While such reports do not indicate the precise number of affected users, they often provide the first indication of widespread technical issues.
Cause still unclear
Meta has now restored the website and the social platform seems back online, but has not commented publicly on the outage or indicated what may have caused the disruption.
The company, which operates Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, periodically experiences technical incidents ranging from localized service interruptions to broader outages. It is not yet known whether Sunday’s incident affected other Meta platforms to the same extent.
