Greece made a visible contribution to France’s Bastille Day military parade on Monday, underscoring the increasingly close defense relationship between Athens and Paris as Europe places greater emphasis on security cooperation.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended the celebrations in the French capital, where President Emmanuel Macron hosted leaders and delegations from across Europe and allied nations.
Greece’s presence, however, extended well beyond its political representation.
A contingent of Greek military personnel marched down the Champs-Élysées alongside troops from France and partner countries, while two Hellenic Air Force Rafale fighter jets joined the traditional aerial display over Paris.
Growing defense partnership between Greece and France
The participation highlighted the growing strategic partnership between Greece and France, which has deepened significantly in recent years through defense agreements, military cooperation, and major arms acquisitions.
Athens has become one of the largest international operators of the French-built Rafale fighter aircraft after acquiring the jets as part of a broader modernization program for the Hellenic Armed Forces.
The aircraft have rapidly become a cornerstone of Greece’s air power and symbolize the expanding defense ties between the two countries.
This year’s Bastille Day celebrations carried additional geopolitical significance as France dedicated the parade to European solidarity and collective security amid continued instability on the continent and ongoing support for Ukraine.
Military contingents from allied nations participated in the event, while France used the occasion to emphasize Europe’s growing defense cooperation and strategic preparedness.
For Greece, participation in the parade offered an opportunity to highlight both its contribution to European security and its increasingly close military relationship with Paris.
The defense partnership between Athens and France has expanded beyond equipment purchases to include joint exercises, operational cooperation, and a mutual defense agreement signed in 2021 that strengthened strategic ties between the two Mediterranean nations.
As Greek troops marched along the Champs-Élysées and Greek Rafales flew over Paris, the images reflected a partnership that has become one of the most significant pillars of Greece’s defense and foreign policy in recent years.
