Greek health authorities are investigating a salmonella outbreak in Central Greece after around 30 people sought hospital treatment in the city of Lamia, prompting an urgent public health response to identify the source of the infections.
The outbreak has been confirmed through laboratory testing at Lamia General Hospital, where patients began arriving with symptoms consistent with salmonella infection. Greece’s National Public Health Organization (EODY) was notified, and an epidemiological investigation is underway.
Health officials are working to determine whether the cases are linked to a common food source. Early findings suggest those affected had eaten at different food establishments, leading investigators to examine whether a shared supplier may have distributed contaminated products.
Investigation examines possible wider food distribution
As the investigation continues, authorities are also examining whether the suspected contaminated food batch may have been distributed beyond Lamia. Officials have not confirmed that contaminated products reached other parts of Greece, and laboratory testing is continuing to determine the exact source of the outbreak.
According to local media, approximately 30 people have sought medical care, while some patients required hospitalization. Most experienced symptoms including diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting, which are typical of salmonella infection.
Inspectors have collected food samples from businesses connected to the investigation, while health authorities are tracing supply chains in an effort to identify the origin of the contamination.
What is salmonella?
Salmonella is one of the world’s most common foodborne bacterial infections. It is typically transmitted through contaminated poultry, eggs, meat, unpasteurized dairy products, fresh produce, or food handled under poor hygienic conditions.
Symptoms usually develop between six hours and six days after exposure and often include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. While most healthy adults recover within several days without specific treatment, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of severe illness requiring hospitalization.
Health authorities advise anyone experiencing severe or persistent symptoms after consuming suspected contaminated food to seek medical attention promptly.
The investigation remains ongoing, with officials expected to release further information once laboratory analyses identify the source of the contamination and determine whether additional products or regions may be affected.
