Veteran actor Sam Neill, celebrated for memorable performances in films including Jurassic Park, The Piano, and television series such as Peaky Blinders, has died at the age of 78.

Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Neill built an international career spanning more than five decades and over 150 screen roles. He rose to prominence in the late 1970s before becoming one of cinema’s most recognizable faces through acclaimed dramas and major Hollywood productions.

Neill became globally known for portraying Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, while his work in productions such as The Hunt for Red October, Dead Calm, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople showcased his versatility as an actor.

In 2022, he was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer but later announced that he was cancer-free following treatment. According to family statements, his death was sudden and unexpected.

Tributes from across the film industry and political leaders in New Zealand and Australia have recognized his immense contribution to cinema and his enduring cultural legacy. He is survived by his children and grandchildren and will be remembered as one of New Zealand’s most distinguished actors.
