Distinguished Greek-Australian academic and artificial intelligence expert Kon Mouzakis has been named an Honorary Professor of the University of West Attica (UNIWA) in recognition of his international contribution to applied artificial intelligence, data science and digital health technologies.
The honorary title was conferred during an official ceremony held at the Australian Embassy in Athens, attended by members of the academic community, researchers and guests from Greece and abroad. The distinction recognizes Professor Mouzakis’ pioneering research and innovation in AI, as well as his advocacy for ensuring technological progress remains centered on human values and ethical decision-making.
Mouzakis recognized for his work in AI and healthcare technologies
Professor Mouzakis, who is based at Australia’s Deakin University, has earned international recognition for his work in artificial intelligence and healthcare technologies. His research has focused on the practical application of AI to improve clinical outcomes and support medical professionals in high-pressure environments.
Among his most notable achievements is the development of what was described as the world’s first clinical decision-support system for the treatment of severe trauma patients at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital. The technology helped reduce medical errors during the critical early stages of trauma care, demonstrating the potential for artificial intelligence to save lives and improve patient outcomes.
Speaking during the ceremony, Australian Ambassador to Greece Alison Duncan welcomed the initiative and highlighted the opportunities for deeper research collaboration between Greece and Australia, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence, information technology and health sciences.
University of West Attica Rector Panagiotis Kaldis described Mouzakis as a visionary scientist whose work places humanity at the centre of technological advancement. University officials also said the appointment reflects the institution’s commitment to strengthening ties with leading members of the Greek diaspora and enhancing international research partnerships.
In his acceptance remarks, Professor Mouzakis stressed that scientific research should ultimately improve people’s lives and argued that human judgement, creativity and responsibility will remain essential in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
